I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while now because I’ve been getting some questions on if blogging is my full-time job. Spoiler – it’s not and I absolutely love my full-time job. I do keep my work pretty separate from my blog but want to answer some of the questions I’ve been getting about keeping that work & blog life balance.
As I sat down to write this post, two words came to mind. It’s hard. I can’t sugar coat having a job that requires 40+ of my time a week and I also can’t make blogging life seem so glamorous. Let’s talk about blogging life for a second. There are cool events I get to go to with fun perks and also really neat collaborations I participate in. There are a lot of late night and rabbit holes I get caught in reading other blogs and getting caught in that little thing called Instagram. The struggle is real! If you have been feeling like you juggle a lot on your plate and need a better system to stay organized, keep reading.
Some of the questions I usually get are around timing, like when I have time to write posts or shoot content. The thing is, I don’t really have a schedule for my blog. Since my full-time position takes precedent, I work around that. My work schedule can be pretty unpredictable on weeks so I try and write posts and produce content when I have time. That’s why you may see weeks where I’m writing 2-3 posts and some weeks where I post nothing. I have been working towards more of a schedule and making lists of “to-do’s” to keep me more organized. One thing I’ve been trying is putting together a Weekly Newsletter instead of sending out an email whenever I put up a new post. I have a reminder on my phone Thursdays to get the email ready to go out by Friday morning.
Productivity Tip // If you don’t utilize the “Reminder” app thats built in to every iPhone, you are seriously missing out. This thing is my lifesaver. Whenever I think of something I need to add to my to-do list but don’t have time right then and there, I add it to the list. I’ll make the reminder a time when I think I’ll be able to complete it. If the reminder comes up and I can’t get it done right then, I move it to another time so it keeps reminding me to complete the task.
While I think it would be amazing to be a full-time blogger and dedicate every waking moment to enhancing my website, engaging with followers and trying new things, I am so incredibly grateful for my current career. I have a job that really challenges me in the growing tech industry and I am learning so much everyday. I’m able to make a guaranteed income every month instead of being freelancer, which is what every blogger is. I’m also given the work environment that motivates me to work harder and learn from others. Lastly, I can do what I want with my blog (take risks, etc) without having to fear the repercussions. Even though there are crazy weeks where I question balancing it all, I love what I do (work & blog) and wouldn’t change this crazy lifestyle for the world.
What I’m wearing // This is a typical business casual outfit for me. Pencil skirts are always a good go-to piece for something work appropriate and having on a nice tops to cycle through. Having career wear that’s a no brainer is a huge timesaver hack. Putting together an outfit while you’re prepping for a long day at the office is the last thing you want to do. I love this pencil skirt from J. Crew and it comes in so many different colors and styles. I also heavily rely on a good work bag. I think it looks so unprofessional to bring a bag that looks messy and dirty. That’s why I tend to go with hard leather for work bags! It’s more likely to look clean and professional.
